As a mum you are busy all the time, there are a million jobs which need doing all the time and, let’s be honest, there isn’t enough time in the day to do them all.
I have been seeing a “Time to Talk” CBT specialist about my anxiety and last week we had a discussion about Mum Guilt. It wasn’t a term he had come across before and the discussion ended up being very insightful, so I thought I’d share.
As I see it there are two types of Mum guilt; there is the guilt of making your child go to school, even when they are clinging to you crying that they don’t want to; because you know it is best for them, then there is the guilt of sitting down and having a hot cup of tea while the Baby sleeps, where you could be using the time to do housework.
The first type is hard on you but i want to talk about the second kind; the one where you feel bad for having a few minutes “me time” because you know you have a dozen other things you “should” be doing.
Everyone deserves a bit of “me time” and a bit of peace and quiet to do something they enjoy. Not only do they deserve it but it’s good for you, you can not live your live only doing things for others; it’s not healthy, you need to be you too.
So take that time to have a bath and read your book, join that exercise class you have been thinking about, sit down and have a cup of tea and a cake while thinking about nothing. Don’t let yourself disappear and just be “mummy” all the time, you are not just a child cared and house cleaner and cook, you are still you! Don’t feel guilty for doing something which brings you joy, the housework can wait!
